KL Orthosports is an orthopaedic sports medicine clinic in Kuala Lumpur focused on evidence-based care, research-driven innovation, and patient-centred treatment. As a UKM startup, we actively translate academic research into practical solutions. As a result, our treatments restore movement, speed up recovery, and protect long-term joint health.
KL Orthosports was founded by Associate Professor Dato’ Dr Badrul Akmal Hisham, an orthopaedic surgeon and clinician-scientist at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). He combines clinical practice with academic research. More importantly, his work focuses on joint preservation and regenerative orthopaedics.
As an orthopaedic sports medicine clinic in Kuala Lumpur, our goal remains clear. We preserve natural tissue whenever possible. At the same time, we improve outcomes using proven scientific methods.
Before introducing advanced ACL techniques, Dr Badrul led UKM-based research on Wharton’s Jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) for knee osteoarthritis. In this Phase I clinical trial, he examined both safety and early effectiveness in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis.
Over six months, patients experienced reduced pain and improved function. In addition, they relied less on pain medication. Importantly, the study reported no serious adverse events.

Joint Preservation Treatments
KL Orthosports continues to advance ACL care through the Modified UKM Internal Brace (MUIB) technique. This method enhances biomechanical support during healing. Therefore, it aims to reduce graft elongation when compared with conventional ACL reconstruction.
